The building in which this hotel is located has a lot of history.

Grand Hotel Karel V has a Roman-themed health centre, conference rooms that can be rented, a bar, a bistro and a restaurant.

The building in which this hotel is located dates back to 1348. In the 16th century, Charles the Fifth (Karel V), emperor of the German Empire, king of Spain and sovereign ruler of the Netherlands, stayed at this monastery which back then also served as a military hospital. Most of the hotel rooms nowadays are located in this former hospital. For a period of time, Napoleon’s brother Louis owned the property.

When the garden wing was renovated in 2007, archaeologists found the remains of a Roman cemetery dating to between 40 BC and 275 AD. During the renovation they tried to keep as many authentic functions of the building as possible. Today the hotel is a national monument.
