**Explore the one of a kind wild garden EcoKathedraal designed by artist Louis Le Roy. **
The Ecokathedraal (“eco-cathedral”) lies in the village of Mildam tucked away in the woodlands of Friesland. As you walk through the wild garden and see walls seemingly left abandoned, you may think this place is a ruin. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Ecokathedraal is designed on purpose to be wild, to let nature take its course throughout its architecture, making it one of the most unique sights in Friesland.
Art doesn’t get more sustainable than this! Back in the 70s, when Le Roy was just starting the Ecokathedraal project, he got the local council to give him leftover bricks and materials from building projects. Take a look around Ecokathedraal’s structures and you might be surprised to see that there is no cement, leaving nature room to breathe in between the bricks. No machinery was used to build the structures here either… You really do feel like this place is humans and nature living together in harmony.
The highlight of Ecokathedraal is the eco-cathedral itself. As you walk closer, you’ll soon see its walls and gate through the trees. But this location is spread across 2 hectares and there are other bits to see. Walk a bit further out into the woodland and you’ll find some mysterious rock piles and structures made from paving stones, all precariously balanced!
