30 square kilometers of drifting sand - this national park will make you feel like you’ve been transported to the Sahara desert!
Okay, so you’re not actually in the Saraha. BUT the Dutch desert is impressive nonetheless! The unique space of land is located right in the middle of the North Brabant province, and is the largest sand drifting area in Northern Europe. It’s pretty different from the flat grasslands with grazing cows people tend to think of when imagining the Netherlands. The shifting sand is truly an incredible sight you do not want to miss! Did you know? During the summer months the temperature can reach up to 40 degrees celsius during the day, and drop to below freezing in the evening. Better bring your scarf!
What can you do in a desert? Take in the scenery with a guided walking tour organized by the park throughout the year. For the adventure seekers, try out the mountain bike trails, horseback riding, or GPS tours. You can find all the maps and details about the different tours on their website or at their visitor center in Oisterwijk.
Life in the desert: contrary to belief, there is life thriving in the Dunes of Loon! You’ll see the transition of the environment from pine forests and heather in between the open sandy spaces. There’s still grassy lands and moss around as well, which makes a good home to the nearby animals. Have your cameras ready for the birds, deer, and badgers who live in the national park.
