Travel back in time to the literary world of Charles Dickens in the annual Christmas festival honouring one of the most beloved English writers.
You’ve probably heard of the characters: Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Ebeneezer Scrooge. If those don’t ring a bell, don’t worry! There are over 950 different characters you may see people dressed up as around Deventer! That’s right - this is one of the city’s biggest events, gathering more than 125,000 visitors! Now that’s a lot of Dickens lovers!
The event takes place in the neighborhood of Bergkwartier located in the center of Dutch city Deventer. Take in the fantastic Christmas lights that completely set the scene of the storybook land. Don’t forget to check out the stalls in the Christmas market or listen to one of the Christmas concerts.
2021 Update: For its 30th anniversary, The Dickens Festival won’t take place at its full capacity this year, but you can still find the entire town decorated during December. There will still be some of the Christmas market stalls, and the Dickens Walk: an audio tour that guides you through the city and brings the Dickens books to life.
