**This beautiful canal/road embraces the city centre of Utrecht. **

The road and the canal that it runs along share the same name: Catharijnesingel. Catharijnesingel serves as the border of the city centre and is beautifully covered in green.

What many people may not know today about the Catharijnesingel is that back in the 1970s, the canal was unfortunately paved over to become a highway. Since Utrecht is geographically located in the heart of the Netherlands, a lot of people drive through the city, thus Utrecht prioritized connecting these cars for less traffic.

By 2010, the mentality shifted to make the city more safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Catharijnesingel was then closed down and gutted out to be transformed into the flowing canal we have today!

Walking along this road, especially on the side of the centre, is perfect for an afternoon stroll. Both sides are full of impressive houses, and if you follow the canal you will end up at Park Lepelenburg.

The canal continues under Hoog Catharijne Mall. This part of the mall has a see-through floor, which makes it possible for the people on the boats to see the people that are in the mall, and from the mall you can see the canal.
