The city is their art gallery! Explore over 100 incredible local and international artworks around the walls of Breda.

Ever wanted to visit a museum on the streets? Well now you can! In the city of Breda, there’s over 100 murals that decorate the entire town. Both local and international artists have come together to create a landscape so enriched with art you’ll have to see it to believe it. Even if you’re just strolling through the city center, you’re bound to come across some of the work.

Breda is a Dutch city known for its beautiful historic buildings. The Breda Castle, the Begijnhof, and the Great Church are all examples of the lovely architecture. But is that all? To be honest, sometimes it can be boring to just see pretty buildings. Now with the creation of the Blind Walls, this place has some extra spice.

An Open Air Gallery

You’ll get to take in all different styles, sizes, and variations of artwork. Under a bridge, on the side of a house, even on the side of Breda University! Hardly anything in this town goes without a splash of paint - and aesthetic! From colourful cartoon astronauts, loosely thrown graffiti, to precise black and white linework, there’s really all types of art to find on the walls. Fall in love with one (or more) of the pieces? They’ve got an online store with funky clothes and decor based on some of the paintings!

What’s the best way to see the Blind Walls Gallery?

Go by foot or by bike, by yourself or with a guided tour. The Blind Walls organization hosts walking tours that go throughout the city centre and last about 1.5 hours. If cycling is more your style, try out the biking tour that lasts around 2.5 hours. Both tours happen twice a month on Sundays, but are typically only in Dutch. If you’d rather check it out solo, it’s pretty hard to miss all the giant art throughout the town. Plus, there’s an interactive map to guide you!

Everything you need to know

  • How did it start? The inspiration came from the oldest known Dutch painting - a 16th century cityscape of medieval Breda and its city wall. What remains of the old walls took a gray and dull appearance, and locals knew they had to revamp it. That’s where the city and artists came together to create the Blind Walls Gallery.
  • Since the Blind Walls Gallery project began in 2015, they’ve created over 100 murals! Fun Fact: The beginning of 2021 marked them reaching the goal of 100, and they aim to add even more!
  • Murals with a local story: Before each mural is made, research has to be done on the building or area. Most of the time locals are able to give their input or tell stories that inspire the art that’s made. The community involvement creates a really special atmosphere that everyone can appreciate.
  • Did you know? The Blind Walls Gallery received the Brabant Heritage Award for its work in the city! Talk about high praise.
