**In the Pijp stands a tribute to the most important Dutch folk singer of all times. **
In the neighbourhood the Pijp in Amsterdam, close to the Albert Cuyp Market, there is a statue dedicated to André Hazes, the most famous Dutch folk singer of all times.
In the 1980’s is when Hazes became successful in the music industry, and from this moment on he scored hits like Een beetje verliefd, Wij houden van Oranje (popular when the Netherlands won the European cup in 1988), Bloed, zweet en tranen and many more.
On 23 September 2004 André Hazes passed away and four days later had his memorial in the (what is now called) Johan Cruiff Arena, where he was supposed to do his final concert exactly one year after his death. There were 48.000 people that joined the ceremony and 6 million (of which 1 million from Belgium) people watched it from live television.
André Hazes’ statue was placed in the area where he grew up in, exactly one year after he died. Many people like to go to the statue to smoke a cigar with the singer or leave some flowers.
