Bike into the depths of Valkenburg's marl caves and explore this underground labyrinth on a guided tour. You won't have been on a bike ride quite like this before!

Descend into the depths, hop on a mountain bike and experience a whole new underground world - the biggest of its kind in Europe. Swap your weekend bike ride for something a bit more adventurous and learn something new while you’re at it. Take an exciting tour of an old, but still active, marlstone mine in Valkenburg, learn about its history as you cycle through the atmospheric, torchlit caves.

You'll find the cave's entrance in a little yellow house, made from marl, naturally. From there you climb down 163 steps, 40 meters, into the depths of the mine where you’ll be kitted out with helmets and specially designed cave bikes. The wonderful hosts at ASP adventure will guide you safely through the maze of dark and mysterious corridors, all the while filling your brains with interesting historical and geological facts.

Perfect. Finally an activity where you don’t have to worry about the weather - people who live in this part of Europe know that’s no easy feat. Bring your friends, family and colleagues, this is great as a group activity - work, birthday, bachelors, you name it.

  • You don’t need to be a mountain biking pro - cave biking is suitable for almost all fitness levels and you’ll be going as fast as the slowest member of your group for safety. The tour is adapted to the abilities of your group so if you want to pick up the pace and zoom through the caves, you can! Your booking slot has a set time limit - if you bike faster, you’ll bike further.
  • ASP Adventure offers two cave biking experiences: ‘Cave Biking’ which lasts 1.5 hours and ‘Cave Biking Through Time’ which is a 2-hour experience with the added bonus of discovering the mine’s underground chapel.
  • Craving a bite to eat after all that activity? ASP Adventure has got you covered. You can choose from a range of options from individual sandwiches to lunch packages to BBQs and buffets. Email the team at ASP Adventure to place your food orders.
  • Guides speak Dutch, German and English so hopefully, nobody has to miss out on the informative side of the tour.
  • Unfortunately, this activity isn’t recommended for all you tall people out there, even though we’re in the Netherlands. The caves have low ceilings, anyone over 190cm is looking at either a bruised head or a very sore back - which doesn’t sound all that fun. Even if you’re a bit shorter, definitely have to duck your head at times!

ASP Adventure has lots of different adventurous activities on offer. Don’t fancy hopping on a bike? Why not book an adventure cave tour or a cave climbing tour? Or stick your head above ground and go on a walking tour where you’re sent out into the Gerendal nature reserve to complete some fun tasks with only a map, protractor and compass.

“We did the cave biking with the adventure tour in the cave afterwards. The guides are super funny and know how to entertain a group! It’s a very cool experience - at times you’re riding in almost pitch black.”

    — Zoe - highly recommends this for any group outing!

Tips and Tricks

  • The cave temperature stays at around 12 degrees celsius all year round - so it's recommended to wear long sleeves or a fleece or light jacket. You’ll be getting active, so wear comfortable trousers and closed shoes.
  • If you’re booking for 1-7 people can book on the website. For larger groups, you can request a custom cave biking experience online, fill out the form here - it's only available in Dutch though. Non-Dutch speakers can get in touch with ASP Adventure by email. The limit for group activities is 18 people.
  • Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the start of your booking. There will probably be other groups booked after you so if you turn up late your experience may be shorter than planned and you likely won’t be getting a refund.
  • The cave biking and adventure cave tours start at Sibbergroeve. Check your confirmation email when booking to re-confirm your starting location address - some ASP adventure activities start in other locations.
