**Located in the Place d’Armes, this fountain features a bronze sculpture of a shepherd leading his sheep. **
The sculpture shows a shepherd guiding a herd of six sheep through the fountain's water while wearing traditional attire, including a cap and a staff. It is situated in Luxembourg City's central Place d'Armes, a sizable plaza. Serge Ecker, a Luxembourgish sculptor and artist, built the fountain, which was dedicated in 1989.
The fountain honours the historical custom of the "Hämmelsmarsch," which was a yearly procession during which sheep were led from meadows outside of Luxembourg City to the city's marketplaces. The procession had a significant role in the history and culture of the city, and the fountain honours this custom.
At around 6 metres high and 9 metres long, the sculpture is striking in and of itself. The Alzette River, which flows through the city, is intended to be represented by the water. A well-known monument in Luxembourg City, the Hämmelsmarsch fountain is a favourite location for travellers to take pictures and take in the surroundings. The sculpture's sheep are modelled after the "Ardennais," a native breed of sheep found in Luxembourg. The 20 cent Luxembourg coin features the Hämmelsmarsch fountain. When it is illuminated at night, it is very stunning.
