The Politeama Syracuse is the oldest cinema theater in Reggio Calabria, the first made during the subsequent reconstruction of the earthquake of 1908. Designed in 1921 by engineers Antonio Barbaro and Giuseppe Canova, adorned with bas-reliefs by the sculptor Ezio reggino Roscitano, has a structure original architecture, considered one of the most accomplished examples of balance between liberty and neoclassical architectural styles.

Located in the heart of the historic city center, on Corso Garibaldi, corner of Via September 2, it has been for decades, along with the now disappeared adjoining coffee, one of the centers of culture and entertainment Strait. Famous traditional masked balls of Carnival and New Year, the conferences held by the protagonists of the culture of the time and theater companies and actors of the first magnitude who have performed on its stage, most notably Angelo Musco, Ruggero Ruggeri, Maieroni Achilles, Gualtiero Turniati, Memo Bernassi, Macario and Wanda Osiris.

After a period of decline, in which the theater has worked almost exclusively as a cinema, until 2009 the Syracuse was managed dall'A.R.Di.S. (Regional Agency for the Right to Education) on behalf of the University "Mediterranea" of Reggio Calabria, with a prose programming, jazz music and film retrospectives, alongside the usual experimental university reviews of Mediterranean Theatre - Laboratory "The Marriage" , directed by Renato Nicolini and Marilu Prati. Since 2010 the property is privately owned, it has been leased to the Calabria Region, which has entrusted under management in 2011 (through a tendering public notice) to the nascent temporary association made up of the Foundation Horcynus Orca (lead agency), Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria and social cooperative Alta Marea. The partnership also includes a number of cultural organizations, artistic and civil economy of the Reggio Calabria area and the area of ​​the Strait, in various capacities and expertise have joined the project management, promoting and supporting him.

Currently the management contract is concluded and the Foundation Horcynus Orca no longer handles the Teatro Syracuse.
