We are the first protected area established by the Lazio Region (LR 21 of 4 April 1979) and we have an area of about 700 hectares in the municipalities of Nazzano (Rom), Torrita Tiberina (Rm) and Montopoli in Sabina (Ri) . Our history has ancient origins dating back to the construction of an artificial dam by Enel (between 1953 and 1955) for the production of electricity. Human intervention with the construction of this great work, along with natural factors like the slow flow and sinuous in this stretch of the Tiber and Farfa dell'immissario confluence led to the formation of a wetland of great interest. Gradually the vegetation typical of the "Wetlands" began to colonize the shores of the basin, and as the years have created a riparian forest formations and hydric very rare around the Lazio region. For the sedimentary nature of the terrain, with wide sandy and clay layers, debris banks have gradually accumulated at the banks and at the center of the pond forming characteristic islets on which the common reed, the cattail and bushy willows and arboreal have found their ideal ecological niche. Wetlands are areas of great importance from a naturalistic point of view, both social and economic, it is in fact concentrated in them a remarkable biological diversity and play a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance; They are also very important areas for activities such as agriculture, animal husbandry and tourism. This environment also constitutes a kind of recharging groundwater reservoir, retains sediments and toxic substances, regulate the climate and limit flood damage. In particular, wetlands play an extremely important role as a resting and wintering sites for waterfowl during the migration period. For all these reasons, and for the strategic position that our wetland plays along the natural corridor linking the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Apennines, over the years this area has been under mounting systems of protection by man. In 1968, thanks to an agreement between Enel, the City of Nazzano and WWF Italy, an '' oasis of fauna protection "was established. In 1971, the Oasis has been declared a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention (Iran). In 1979 it set up the Regional Natural Reserve Nazzano Tevere-Farfa (the name recalls the Lake Nazzano, the Tiber and Farfa River) first regional protected area of Lazio. The Nature Reserve is also SIC (Site of Community Importance) and SPA (Special Protection Area) under the Habitats Directive 92/43 / EEC and the Birds 2009/147 / EC (which updated the previous Directive 79/409 / EEC) and it is included in the European system Natura 2000 network (Mediterranean biogeographical region). The Reserve is freely accessible every day from dawn to dusk, in compliance with the rules of conduct governing the use Protected Area. All information is available on our official website.
