The Museum of Sketches "Pierluigi Gherardi" was founded in 1984 in Pietrasanta, as a result of actions taken by Jette Muhlendorph, with the intent to document the artistic activity of the sculptors who come here from around the world to carry out their work in laboratories local artisans. It 'a unique institution of its kind and is a direct reflection of that most characterizes the Apuan-Versilia and Pietrasanta in particular: the sculpture.

A tradition of centuries in fact binds the city to the marble working: activities pietrasantesi masters is attested in several cities of the region since the fourteenth century, as well as being witnessed by the works present in the city churches; Pietrasanta is that in the sixteenth century Michelangelo was to sign contracts for the marbles he made draw the nearby Apuan Alps.

The activity of the marble workshops and was then one of the artistic bronze foundries and workshops of mosaic artists, trainers, the magnifiers in clay. In more recent times that live in symbiosis with the art it has continued and increasingly develops thanks to the special skills and craftsmanship of local artisans, today's followers of the ancient tradition, which attracts sculptors from all over the world, including the leading exponents contemporary art, which are included here to realize their works.

Housed in the sixteenth-century former convent of St. Augustine, the Museum aims to tell the process of creation and realization of a work in marble and bronze, enhance generations of artists and document the indelible traces that they have left.
