The Civic Museum, pursuant to art. 8 of the Regional Law n. 89 of December 1980, to which it conforms, is a cultural and educational tool of social development in the service of citizens, applied to the actual work of impartiality, respecting different opinions, concurring with other local authorities, to promote conditions that make effective enhancement, protection, preservation and use of cultural and environmental assets in the relevant municipal territory.
The Civic Museum of Sansepolcro identifies the definition of "museum" formulated by ICOM (International Council of Museums) its mission ( "permanent institution, non-profit, serving the society and its development. And 'open to the public and conducts research concerning the material and intangible testimonies of humanity and its environment; acquires, preserves, communicates and, especially, exhibits, for purposes of study, education and enjoyment "), he shares the general goals, in relation to the history and culture of the city of Sansepolcro, from its origins to the present day, and its relationships with other artistic and cultural centers. In particular, the Civic Museum of Sansepolcro bases its mission in the double identity of copyright museum, linked to the masterpieces of Piero della Francesca, for which it is known worldwide, and civic museum that preserves and hands down the artistic history of the city.
The Civic Museum of Sansepolcro, in the performance of these tasks, work in concert and in close collaboration with the Municipal Library. The Civic Museum Sansepolcro is run by the Institution Cultural Civic Museum, Municipal Library, the Historical Archives, established by the City of Sansepolcro in 1998.
