The Museum is housed in the Forte Sangallo Civita Castellana, military structure built by Alexander VI Borgia, and built by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder around 1495. Considered one of the most important works of the military, the fort was papal residence until the early 1800s, when it was changed into a prison, first political and then, since 1846, the military. After 1870, with the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy the papal domains, the fortress became home imprisonment and finally, during and after the Second World War, a refuge for many displaced families. The current appearance is the result of a difficult and long restoration that has allowed the functional recovery of the monumental complex, aimed at archaeological museum, open to the public in 1977.
