Once the core of the mighty Roman Empire, and the cradle of the Renaissance, it is also home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world, including high art and monuments. It is here that we find the ruins of Pompeii, the ancient village frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, today dormant. Other archaeological sites in the area are among the best preserved in the country. Descending its coastline, travellers cross fishing villages and observe the unparalleled beauty of the Bay of Naples, whose innumerable palaces are well worth a visit. It was here that the pizza was born, a dish now eaten worldwide; when it comes to folklore, its traditional dance known as the 'Tarantella' is widely known. As an agricultural region famous for its cereals, olives, tomatoes and vineyards, it is gradually beginning to industrialise.
