The Fotomuseum, founded in 1983 and designated as a Priority Museum in 1986, provides a comprehensive insight into the extremely fascinating and still young medium of photography. On the basis of historical photographs of the city's history, an outstanding camera collection of more than 600 apparatus from all times and fields of application as well as the presentation of early photographic processes, 170 years of photo history are impressively presented. Another highlight is the gallery for contemporary photography. Special exhibitions deepen the different positions in the field of artistic photography. In 1998 it was named after the founder and longtime leader Dr.Robert Gerlich.
