History and Mission:

Welcome to the page dedicated to the Museum of Hortillonnages!

The Museum has the will to respect the history and heritage of Hortillonnages of Amiens.

Gardening disappeared in the Hortillonnages of Amiens and today there are only a few professionals. The site and its daily life is changed by various economic, environmental and cultural issues.

Given the magnitude of these changes, Therese and René Nowak, craft hortillons 35 years - in vegetable plots surrounded by canals - looking to sustain their business and history. In 2003, René Nowak recovers tools and specific objects vegetable gardening site. Thus in 2013, an association was created to implement the project of Museum of Hortillonnages.

And that is the heart of the Hortillonnages in 2014, the museum finally born, a place of memory of gestures and expertise of this unique site workers. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the art and life hortillon Hortillonnages of Amiens. The Museum's collection of objects mainly concerns the areas of professional life and domestic life. Among the significant items included traditional Market gardening tools in hand and objects of everyday life hortillons.
