Nestled between the Charente River and the enchanting Château de Fleurac, lies a hidden treasure of local history - Château de La Mothe Charente. This nearly millennium-old castle has recently been brought back to life by its passionate owners, Dominique and Bernard Bordas. With its picturesque seven-hectare park, this historic site is now open to tourists from around the world.
The history of Château de La Mothe Charente dates back to the Middle Ages when it was known as a fief, possibly the oldest in the region. The name "La Mothe" is believed to be derived from its construction on a feudal mound, a symbol of power and seat of authority during that time.
In 1240, Isabelle Taillefer, the former Queen of England, granted the stronghold of La Mothe to Geoffroy de Bouteville. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, with the Giraud family holding it for nearly four centuries. During the Wars of Religion, Thomas Giraud, a supporter of the Protestant cause, attempted to capture the city of Angoulême but was unsuccessful. As a result, the castle suffered significant damage from a company of musketeers. It was only when Henry of Navarre ascended the throne and became Henry IV that the Giraud family regained their property.
From 1731 onwards, the castle underwent numerous renovations and changes under different owners, transforming it into the magnificent structure we see today.
Château de La Mothe Charente is a stunning example of early 18th-century architecture, boasting exceptional dimensions that rival some of the aristocratic mansions in Paris' Faubourg Saint-Germain. The main building, concealed by a balustrade, is flanked by two wings with slate roofs, giving it a grand and regal appearance. With its 52 windows overlooking century-old trees, the castle exudes a timeless charm.
Today, Château de La Mothe Charente offers five charming guest rooms, each named after a tree found in the park, such as Cedar of Lebanon, Magnolia, Larch, and Sequoia. Guests can immerse themselves in the castle's rich history while enjoying modern amenities. The owners have plans to enhance the guest experience by adding a sauna, jacuzzi, and a small fitness room to complement the existing swimming pool.
The castle's expansive grounds, surrounded by an 18th-century enclosure wall, provide a perfect setting for events such as weddings. In fact, the first wedding is scheduled to take place at the end of August, showcasing the castle's versatility as a venue.
