The Jewish Community of Estonia exists from the beginning of the 19th century, although the first Jew was mentioned already in 1333. The museum tells the life of Estonian Jews from the 19th century to present days and shows their contribution to Estonian life.

The museum has four parts:

  • Main exhibition
  • Archive
  • Reading Room
  • The electronic part of the museum at http://eja.pri.ee

The main exhibition shows pictures, documents and exhibits, which were collected from private persons, archives and other museums. This covers following topics:

  • Religion
  • History before the WWII
  • History between 1940-1988
  • Youth organizations and corporations
  • Rebirth of the community in 1988
  • Education and science
  • Arts and crafts
  • Sport
  • Business
  • Antisemitism
  • Fight for the right to emigrate to Israel (1967-1988)

The archive contains original material (pictures, documents, exhibits) as well as the copies of the material. The list of the archive funds can also be found on the museum website.

The reading room has books, articles, video and music about Estonian Jews or written by the Estonian Jews. The list can be found on the website.

Our archive and reading room are increasing by the contributions from the members of the Estonian Jewish Community and sponsors.

The museum website eja.pri.ee includes EJA (Estonian Jewish Archive) site, where one can find articles, memoirs, genealogical material and many pictures. It also has a search engine.
