How do you feel about a gorgeous castle, views for days, and a medieval vibe? That is exactly what you'll get exploring Liberec Heights!

Liberec Heights is known for its amazing view overlooking the city of Liberec, Ještěd and the Jizera Mountains.

On top of all the views you will find one of the most iconic landmarks of Liberec right in the middle of the forest. A gorgeous medieval castle that dates back to the early 1900's lies in the heart of the forest.

A bit of backstory: The ownership of Liberecka Vysina has changed hands multiple times - from the original textile magnate Heinrich von Liebig in 1900 to the city and now to a private owner. With all the change of hands it’s gone from a restaurant to a disco and now to a beautiful hotel and restaurant where Czechs and tourists can come stay and enjoy the nature surrounding this castle.

So if you’re a nature lover and love exploring new places it’s worth spending a night here. Enjoy the yummy food at the restaurant and check out all the beautiful viewpoints and attractions in the area.

  • Liberecká Výšina was built by local Heinrich von Liebig. It took him two years, from 1900 to 1901 to build this now famous building. His goal was to turn it into a stylish restaurant and place for locals to visit.
  • There has been lots of reconstruction done to the castle over the years. Unfortunately because of that most of its beauty was erased in 1999. Thankfully after some help from the EU and the city, Liberecka Vysina reopened in 2013 and has been a popular tourist attraction ever since.

Tips and Tricks

  • Under the castle is a small lake where you can take some beautiful pictures.
  • If you’re walking in the area it’s worth stopping by Heinrich Liebig’s Villa called the Forest Villa. It’s a pretty villa with a big gate and walls, although it’s not kept in the best condition.
  • Once you've explored the area you can follow the trails and walk to the Liberec Zoo which is close by. In winter, when the hill is covered in snow, a fun activity is to ride a sled or sleigh, a couple of friends, and race down the hill from Vysica to Lidovy.

Getting There

  • By Car: By car you can get almost to the castle. There is free parking.
  • By Tram: 10 minute walk from Lidové Sady tram stop. Trams 2 and 3 stop here.

Route details

  • Starting point: The starting point of the route is located opposite of the main entrance to the Zoo. 50 ° 46'39.798 "N, 15 ° 4'52.861" E
  • Signage: follow the whiteboards or tourist signs.
  1. The first option is to follow the whiteboards, of which there are several on the way and they will lead you to your destination without any problems.
  2. The second option is to follow the tourist signs. At the starting point there is a tourist signpost, that shows with colorful signs directions that you can take. Follow the yellow-marked sign saying Liberecká Výšina. It is only 1 km away. If you follow the yellow tourist signs that are mainly on the trees it is super easy to find.
