The Museu Paulista was inaugurated on September 7, 1895 as a museum of Natural History and representative landmark of Independence, History of Brazil and Paulista. Its first nucleus of collection was the collection of Colonel Joaquim Sertório, who constituted a private museum in São Paulo.

In the period of the Independence Centennial, in 1922, the institution's historical character was reinforced. New collections were formed, highlighting the History of São Paulo. The interior decoration of the building was realized, with paintings and sculptures presenting the History of Brazil in the Hall, Staircase and Noble Hall. It was installed the Republican Museum "Convention of Itu", extension of the Paulista Museum in the interior of the State.

Over time, there have been a number of transfers of collections to different institutions. The last one was in 1989, for the Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of USP. From then on, the Paulista Museum has substantially expanded its collection for the period from 1850 to 1950 in São Paulo.

Currently, the Paulista Museum has a collection of more than 125,000 units, including objects, iconography and textual documentation, from the 17th century to the mid-20th century, meaningful for the understanding of Brazilian society, especially in what refers to the history of São Paulo. specialized curatorial team. It also develops an Expansion Project of its physical spaces.
