Take the gorgeous original wooden escalators and walk under the Scheldt river through this pedestrian tunnel

St. Anna’s Tunnel (Sint-Annatunnel) is unlike any other in Antwerp. It’s from the 1930s but has retained its original art deco style original wooden escalators and lift. Everyone visiting the city should take it at least once to get to the left bank of Antwerp (linkeroever).

Locals take this tunnel often too. It’s actually pretty popular with cyclists and walkers on the trail. If that’s your thing, make sure you check it out along the way.

You can either use the escalators or elevator to get down to the tunnel. The escalators are known to be the highlight here, but it’s worth trying out both. We recommend taking one down then using the other on your way back up so you get the full experience of Saint Anna’s Tunnel.

  • Fun fact: the elevator is massive as they built it at the time in case there was an emergency where they’d have to get an ambulance across the river
  • It’s more than a pretty place! When you go down the escalator you’ll see pictures on the wall showing the tunnel's history and how it was built, if you want to learn a bit as well.
  • Craving for some greenery? Cross over to the left bank (linkeroever) for tons of nature reserves and parks like St. Anna Forest and Galgenweel lake.
