Take the relaxing, scenic route through the Ardennes in this outdoor kayaking adventure.

What’s more relaxing than sitting back in a kayak, floating down the river and breathing in the sweet smell of nature? Yeah, we can’t think of anything else either. One of the best ways to experience the outdoors of the Ardennes landscape is by taking a slow-paced kayaking trip. Go with a group of friends, your significant other, or even ride solo in arguably the most relaxing water sport.

The kayaking trip is about 14 km and can take anywhere between 1.5 to 3 hours depending on how slow you want to glide along the Semois river. It’s an extremely calm and safe river that is accessible to everyone, including beginners. You’ll pass by some seriously incredible sights along the way: giant hanging trees, cozy Belgian estates, and even a castle! Don’t be alarmed if you see someone standing in the river, it’s a common spot for locals to do some fishing.

Kayaking is a relatively easy sport to pick up, so no lessons are required before booking the excursion. As long as you’re able to move the paddle back and forth, you’ll be good to go! One thing to note is that the river itself is pretty shallow. If you manage to get stuck on one of the rocks, don’t panic! Just nudge the bottom with your oar and you’ll be on your way again.

  • Always be prepared: Although you’ll be sitting inside a kayak, there’s still a chance some water can get in. Make sure to wear proper clothes, and maybe pack an extra set just in case! There’s a dressing room at the Bouillon-Poupehan route.
  • Since this is Belgium we’re talking about, keep the ever-changing weather in mind. Check the weather in the region beforehand and bring a rain jacket along just in case.
  • Semois river SUP: If kayaking isn’t your thing, go down the river in a different style with a paddleboard! Stand or sit while paddling your way down the water.
  • The SEMOIS company offers free shuttle buses to and from the kayaking starting point. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can take a scenic hike back to the beginning spot!
  • The Semois river is one of Belgium’s incredible examples of nature. To keep it at its most pristine state, SEMOIS kayaking asks that you respect the area and not leave any waste on board or in the kayak.

This was an incredible way to see the Ardennes! I went with a group of friends in the peak of Autumn, so the entire kayaking route was surrounded with vibrant coloured trees and crisp air. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature and getting outdoors.
