Discover the Natural Beauty of Parco delle Gole della Breggia in Balerna

Nestled in the picturesque region of Balerna, Switzerland, lies the enchanting Parco delle Gole della Breggia, also known as the Breggia Gorge Park. Established in 1998 and opened to the public in September 2001, this park is a true gem for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

A Geological Wonder

One of the most remarkable aspects of Parco delle Gole della Breggia is its extraordinary geological significance. The park is home to a diverse range of natural and man-made components, but it is the geological content that truly sets it apart. In fact, it is considered one of the most important geotopes in Switzerland and is listed in the Inventory of Landscapes, Sites, and Natural Monuments of National Importance.

The park showcases rocks that span hundreds of millions of years, offering a unique glimpse into the Earth's history. The exposed rocks include 190-million-year-old selciferous limestone, rich in clay and fossils. Visitors are reminded not to remove any materials from the park to preserve its natural beauty.

Exploring the Park

Parco delle Gole della Breggia can be easily explored through its network of trails, covering a length of 12 kilometers and a vertical drop of 300 meters. The park offers two recommended itineraries: a historical route and a geological route.

The historical route takes you from the Mulino del Ghitello to the Mulin da Canaa, following the river and passing by interesting historical landmarks such as the old cement factory, brewery, and Saceba cement plant. The route then leads to the ruins of the San Pietro Castle and the Chiesa Rossa before descending to the old 19th-century road and reaching the bridge and remains of the "da Canaa" mill.

The geological route, on the other hand, takes you from the Mulin da Canaa to the Ghitello. Along this route, you'll encounter the oldest rocks in the park, the 190-million-year-old selciferous limestone, which are rich in clay and fossils. You'll also cross the narrow and deep Buzun dal Diavul gorge and witness the stunning rock formations of Radiolariti rossastre and Conglomerato di Pontegana.
