La Roche-en-Ardenne Castle gives you an insight into a medieval past filled with knights, lords, and maybe even a ghost!

Looking for a break from reality and the chance to explore the past? Built near La Roche-en-Ardenne in the 9th century, this castle possesses a rich history. Due to its location on the river Ourthe, more and more defense was needed to protect this castle, which was done by adding curtain walls and towers for the next 500 years.

  • In the 18th century, Louis XIV ordered some new remodels but the castle was demolished soon after by order of the Hapsburgs. This destruction was made more permanent by WWII allied bombings in 1944.
  • Today, the remains of the castle stand in place as a historical landsite and have a breathtaking view of the small town of La Roche-en-Ardenne.
  • One of the main attractions is ghost Berthe de la Roche. She was stabbed to death by her rival after a deadly love triangle. Rumor has it she can be seen on clear sunny nights roaming the castle.
  • There are various events throughout the year, like the falconry demonstration, medieval crafts, medieval fair, and archery.
