**The old and the new of Belgium come together at CID in Grand Hornu. Get your design fix at this industrial site. **
Contemporary design exhibits have a home right next to an old brick factory on the grounds of Boussu’s old mining site. CID hosts 3-5 every year, featuring Belgian and international designers. From galaxy brain space-inspired design to watery design challenges, CID hosts exhibits on all kinds of artsy design topics. You can visit as a group or fly it solo.
The history bits: UNESCO World Heritage Site. Grand Hornu was founded in 1810 by industrialist Henri De Gorge. He wanted to make a super friendly space to live and work in. The coal mine closed in 1954, but reopened as an art gallery and design centre in the 90s. Plus, CID is just 15km from Mons.
There’s a trendy cafe in the museum, plus a lovely little terrace. While you’re at Grand-Hornu, pay a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Arts of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (MACS) for extra art goodies.
