In the heart of the city lies the Grand Place, the central square of Brussels surrounded by the Guild houses, Maison du Roi, and City Hall.
A tourist hotspot of Brussels! The Grand-Place of Brussels has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, so you know it's full of history. Brussels Grand-Place is famous for its aesthetic and lavish appeal.
Taking a picture of this scenery can be difficult due to the daily crowds who come here. You’ll get the best photos and views outside the tourist season or early in the morning.
History moment: this square has tons of stories to tell. Tragically, protestant martyrs, Hendrik Voes and Jan Van Essen were burned here in 1523. During World War II, the town hall within the Grand Place was turned into a makeshift hospital. In 1929, the Grand Place was even bombed. Take a walk through history!

Throughout the year, there are lots of events that take place at the Grand Place. Check your calendar to see when you can drop by.
- Christmas magic: in the winter, a Christmas tree and manger can be found in the square. Plus, it’s decorated with Xmas lights! The Grand-Place Christmas market is a sight to see during the winter months, especially during the Son-et-Lumiere Light Show.
- In August (every two years), a flower carpet of begonias decorates the center of the square. We love that flower power.
- Every two years, in June and July, the Ommegang of Brussels performs a show in the Grand Place.It’s basically a parade in full medieval costume!
Tips and Tricks
During the winter, the bars inside the square sell mulled wine to keep you warm. Due to its popularity with tourists, the Grand Place is a common area for pickpockets. Keep your bags close!
