One of the best examples of this green capital is the local favorite: Duden park.

This park is not like any other you’ll find in the city; it’s a forest. People come here to enjoy the tall trees, large fields, and the overall feel of an urban escape. You’ll find it filled with joggers, picnic-enthusiasts, dog-walkers, and pretty much anyone who wants to enjoy the green lungs of the city.

Views of the city: The highest side of the park borders the former bourgeois areas of Forest and grants a panoramic view of the city. The north side, 45 meters lower, connects to the Forest Park, forming a green bridge to the more industrial neighborhoods of lower Brussels.

History deets

Once upon a time, Duden park went by the name ‘Heegde Wood’. The wood went from Boitsfort all the way to Forest. During the middle ages, this area belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Forest, a priory of women that was founded in 1106. The Abbey lasted hundreds of years until after the French Revolution in the 18th century, when the land was bought by Mosselman, who built a country house there. You can still see the Neoclassical style Palladian villa there today.

In 1869, the land was snapped up by Guillaume Duden, a German merchant. He was a big fan of King Leopold II. The King gave him the land with two conditions. One, he keeps the land public and two, it must be named after him. King Leopold II was far from perfect, but at least he appreciated free parks!

Along with the land, Duden built a neoclassical style mansion, stables, bridges, a kiosk, and a Protestant church (which no longer exists today).

Summer chill

In the summer check out the open air pop-up bar (or guingette) Chez Émile for a drink or bite to eat in the park. You'll find it at the top of the stairs at the entrace with views across the city and Forest Park as well as the beautiful flower garden.
