**An abandoned mine, former zoo, and hidden gem of Chatelet. Perfect for urbex. **

Abandoned buildings are abandoned for a reason. It’s not super safe to go wandering about, but it’s worth a look if you happen to be in the area. The mine was active from 1916 to 1969. Urban explorers will discover lively graffiti on its forgotten walls, ruins, and mine shafts of Charbonnage du Gouffre.

This coal mine was once full of life. It was the main coal mine of Société des Charbonnages du Gouffre and got hundreds of thousands of tons of coal from the earth each year in its heyday. As the coal began to run dry, the coal mine was closed in 1969. After that, Charbonnages du Gouffre became a zoo for 3 years (random, we know!) but that didn’t work out. So, it’s been abandoned since 1982.

In recent years, Charbonnages du Gouffre has become a popular site for urbex (urban exploration of usually abandoned buildings). Urbex fans will have a great time uncovering the overgrown and forgotten buildings, industrial atmosphere, and steps throughout the site.

Please note that exploring abandoned buildings is frowned upon by the local police.
