Charleroi’s street art

Enjoy the abstract street art scattered across the city. Make the most of this open air museum, enjoying the parts that capture your interest, at your own pace.

Charleroi’s history is steeped in the industrial movement, making the modern twist of street art a real treat on the eye. This idea was coined in 2014 when the “Urban Dream” project was started by the BPS22 museum. Today, it includes 11 monumental frescos as well as several other smaller works. It makes sense that Charleroi has developed a scene for street art given that it is the birthplace of Belgian comic strip culture, starting with the publishing of the Spirou magazine in 1938. Whatever kind of art you’re into, something on your wanders will catch your eye: with pop art, wild geometric patterns, video game murals and wacky sculptures, something is bound to capture your imagination.

• If you fancy a leg stretch then you can see all the key pieces of art via foot- in total the route is about 4km. Alternatively, make use of the metro or bus and hop on and off as you wish.
• This activity is completely free! Take the tour at your own pace, stopping off for a coffee or snack on the way, it is completely adaptable to your schedule.

• Are you a comic strip fan? Well this is the perfect way to spend your day: spot statues of characters like Spirou and Fantasio, Lucky Luke and Billy and Buddy!
