Bring your friends, bring the kids and get active, in all kinds of ways, on Beringen’s “Adventure Mountain”.
Okay so it’s not an actual mountain...but it IS a repurposed mining slag heap and it's definitely more exciting than that sounds. Part of the be-MINE complex in Beringen, Adventure Mountain lets you walk, run, climb and bike your way up and down this cool recreational development project.
This site is one of the best examples of Limburg’s coal mining past and is protected as such, this led the city of Beringen to go about reinventing the complex. Two slag heaps, locally known as “terhills”, formed by dumped mining waste, have been transformed: the large one into a nature reserve and the small one, still 55 meters high, into Adventure Mountain.
The “mountain” boasts stairs and walking trails, adventurous climbing and clambering sections and slides. As well as that, the mountain is made more visually impressive by the land art project found on its slopes: a pole forest made of 1600 wooden poles simultaneously helps the heap blend into the countryside whilst also drawing attention to its artistic side.
If you’ve been inspired by the mountain’s adventure or the history, there are loads of things to do, all within walking distance. Head over to the Mijnmuseum to discover more about the history of mining in Beringen and Limburg. Or if you wanted to keep climbing then visit the Alpamayo rock climbing gym. Want something totally different? Swap earth for water and dive in at TODI, where you can go scuba-diving in a huge fish tank. Alternatively if, if you want to relax and treat yourself, be-MINE has its own shopping boulevard.
