A historical and architectural gem in the heart of Brussels. Visit this gothic abbey and get lost in the flamboyant gardens.

This popular haven in the centre of the city is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle. Enjoy a stroll through the large gardens and marvel at the architecture.

The abbey

The abbey itself was founded way back in 1201 by a noble lady named Gisèle when it became a monastery of Cistercian nuns. A lot of the buildings were damaged during religious wars and rebuilt in the 16th century before being enlarged a couple of hundred years later, so only certain parts of this impressive site still remain from the 14th century.

Most of the buildings aren’t accessible to visitors but they’re still great to look at from the outside (we promise!). One building that you can visit and go inside is the gothic-style abbey church that dates back to 1362. It's worth checking out purely for the fact that it's the only building from medieval times that still partially survives today.

The gardens

The magnificent, well-maintained gardens are probably the real reason you’re here. Restored in the 21st century, the gardens are now split into two distinct parts. Enjoy a more forest feel? Head to the wooded park area where you’ll find the “duck pond” and Maelbeek spring. Or is landscaping more your thing? You’ll definitely be impressed by the terraced garden which is found at the top of a monumental staircase (where else?!).

It's safe to say there’s a lot of history here, and after 800 years you’re welcome to bask in its beauty, bring a picnic and enjoy some peace and quiet away from the capital. If you fancy exploring some more nature outside the city, check out the nearby Bois de la Cambre.

Chez Gisèle

In the summer enjoy a drink, bite to eat and kick back in a deckchair in these memorable surroundings. Chez Gisèle - an open air pop-up bar (or guinguette) - is nestled into a courtyard at the entrance to the abbey. Chez Gisèle translates to “at Gisèle’s house” so make yourself at home in this idyllic setting, we’re sure she’d want you to.
