Austria, along with neighboring Switzerland, is the winter sports center of Europe. However, it is just as popular for summer tourists who visit its historic cities and villages and hike in the magnificent scenery of the Alps. Austria has a big number of lakes. Normally they are very clean, so you can swim in them; they provide camping places nearby. In winter you can use them for ice skating. In some places, you will have to pay to get on the lakeside. Beside all that rustic, tranquil nature and countryside, Austria has a whole other side too. As one of Europe's former great powers, Austria boasts a wealth of majestic architecture and historic structures. As it was long a centre of power in the Holy Roman Empire, you'll find not only palaces and magnificent city architecture but also grand cathedrals, monasteries and churches.

Important rivers in Tyrol are the Adige, Inn and Drau. The region is characterized by many valleys. The most important valleys are the Inn Valley and Adige Valley. The region is also full of romantic lakes and castles and beer drinking lederhosen clad locals playing ump-papa music and marching in bands, the place can seem also as a fairy tale to the visitor at times because it is! Halfway between Bavaria and northern Italy, it is a hub of a region popular for skiing and other mountain-related activities and a busy tourist destination. Its popularity as a winter sports resort was underscored by the hosting of the Winter Olympic Games twice.

Tyrol

Baroque Annasäule (Anne's column) is actually a Maria column in Innsbruck's center which was established by 1706 after a 1704 promise by public authorities, because on St. Anne's Day, July 26, 1703, Bavarian invaders were defeated and expelled from the Tyrol (for a while, to be precise).
